We are delighted to offer the Female EcologiX Vaginal Health and Microbiome Profile. This is a ground- breaking tool for analysis of the vaginal microbiota composition. Using the latest in technology, the profile provides an accurate, reliable and quantifiable measurement of microbiota abundance and markers for host immune responses.
Vaginal Microbiome
Ladies, did you know that you have a vulva- vaginal microbiome? Just like your gut this area is home to a wonderful ecosystem of bacteria. Also just like the gut, when this ecosystem is imbalanced it may contribute to health issues such as UTIs, bacterial vaginosis, infertility , endometriosis and miscarriage.
Less is more
Unlike the gut however we aren’t looking for a huge amount of diverse strains in the vaginal microbiome. The key genus is lactobacilli. They are the gatekeepers of the vaginal ecosystem. Lactobacilli are extremely important for vaginal health due to their protective and antimicrobial functions. Lactobacilli produce lactic acid, creating an acidic environment (pH 2.8–4.2) that is inhospitable to potential pathogens. A healthy vaginal microbiome aids in the prevention of bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections and other possible problems.
The vaginal microbiomes of women with healthy ongoing pregnancies have a stable lactobacilli community, often dominant with L. crispatus. Some ongoing studies are showing a lactobacilli-rich environment, or even using L. crispatus on the insert device for IVF, may increase pregnancy rates.
Mind your microbes
Diets high in excess sugar may contribute to overgrowth or vaginal dysbiosis. Avoiding excessive simple carbohydrates, and excessive alcohol intake is supportive of this area. As with the gut, any course of antibiotics you may take will impact this microbiome too so taking lactobacillus species probiotics and including some fermented foods may help mitigate any damage.
